Lab Manager will lead and oversee the wastewater treatability testing and wet chemistry laboratory and the associated chemists/technicians. This laboratory facility, located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, is dedicated to performing comprehensive treatability testing with the goal of developing and optimizing solutions for treatment and/or reclaim of industrial water and wastewater. It is essential that the lab manager understands the concept of scalability and the evolution from bench scale testing to pilot-scale testing and furthermore how the information garnered during these tests can be “scaled-up” to a full-scale system. The lab manager will; develop and manage the overall operational budget of the lab, interface with Evoqua internal sales and business development teams to develop testing protocols and proposals for treatability studies, assign workload, determine priorities, ensure proper laboratory equipment maintenance, perform regular audits to ensure safety compliance, and maintain the lab area in a clean, orderly state in adherence to Lean 5S principles. 




  • Synthesize a customer problem statement into a bench-scale or pilot-scale treatability study with end goal of yielding the required information to develop a full-scale treatment system concept and design
  • Prepare formal quotations for treatability testing services
  • Have a thorough understanding of water chemistry and the wide myriad of typical and emerging water treatment process steps
  • Familiarity with analytical testing instrumentation and protocols for inorganic and organic parameters used for the analysis of water and wastewater.
  • Develop and review written treatability protocols for viability of achieving identified goals
  • Review treatability reports from completed programs to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Develop and manage the operating budget for the treatability lab
  • Manage day to day activities and career development of a team of chemists/technicians
  • Oversee and maintain laboratory policies and ensure the staff members comply with organization and EHS requirements including chemical storage and waste management policies
  • Organize and maintain the lab areas and systems with the Lean 5S methodology by working with scientific staff and third-party vendors
  • Closely work with staff to maintain laboratory supplies inventory
  • Request maintenance service to resolve daily laboratory and service issues
  • Act as a point of contact between Evoqua sales and business development teams and staff
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to increase operational efficiency of the laboratory
  • Work with SMEs at Evoqua to build up and organize treatability workstations/test-rigs for pilot scale modeling of various water treatment unit operations

Bachelor Degree in Chemistry or other Life sciences.


Required Experience:


  • 5+ years hands on experience in a laboratory.
  • 3-5 years relevant lab management experience.
  • Building experiments and run water treatment testing.
  • Water Chemistry
  • Scalability, Treatability, Feasibility experience.
  • Water Industry




  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills are essential
  • Strong understanding (advanced skills) of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Smartsheet
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership in areas of responsibility
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced company environment with potentially minimal direction and be able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities.
  • Strong Leadership skills.
